When I don’t have that pause, come to jesus moment with myself, I often don’t take the incremental steps required for me and for the things that I want. So in 2024, I want to be there for you, helping to remind you day to day that you can choose. And on the days that you choose not to, that’s cool too. We don’t have to be all in all the time, but we do have to show up. And that’s why I created 👁VISIBILITY.

Have you ever had the thought.. “I’ll begin when..”

Like, I’ll start surfing when I lose 10 pounds.

Or, I’ll actually fully commit to this job, I’ll start really showing up and giving it my all when I get a raise or a promotion. Or when I get this new title.

Or, I’ll start my business when I am certain about what it is that I’m offering. Or, when I have saved X dollars.

Or, I’ll start selling this service when I hit X followers or whatever other milemarker.

Have you ever had any of these thoughts? Or a variation on these thoughts? And they could be even smaller like,

I’ll make that post when I am wearing makeup. Or the right outfit.

I’ll go when I’m invited.

I’ll start after this series ends on Netflix.

I’ll do yoga when I wake up at 4 am.

The “I’ll do X when Y happens?” at small or large scale. I’ll do X when the conditions are right, or after this other milestone or requirement or sneaky self-made gatekeeper.

&&

What about the thought “If I were,” “if I had,” then “I would do BLAH.”

Like, if I had 10,000 followers on Instagram, I would create a brand and sell skincare.

Or, if I quit my job, I would go all in on my business.

Or, if I were an executive, I would lead like this.

Or, if I were in that position of someone over there, I would do things this other way.

This way of thinking – If I were, or I’ll begin when ..

This is our minds, our sweet little brains, keeping us feeling comfortable. It’s our sweet, little, cute brains feeding our ego and allowing us to feel good about wherever it is that we are in life, most especially to feel OK and justified that we are not yet where we desire to be.

Why?

Because it’s more comfortable to be here, right now. It’s more comfortable to face the realities and circumstances that we know, than it is to face the realities that we don’t know – even if the realities or circumstance or desires that we don’t know, or aren’t familiar with are objectively better than the realities that we do know.

Oftentimes, when we say things like “I’ll begin when” or “if I were him, I would,” – it’s our brains allowing us to settle into a lesser version of ourselves, while getting us off the hook for true self-accountability.

When we say things to ourselves like “I’ll begin when”, we are simply cutting ourselves short. We are absolutely lying to ourselves – whether it be a lie that we are actually going to do the thing under X circumstance, or a lie about whether or not we actually want to do the thing, regardless of circumstance.

We are fooling ourselves so that we can feel OK about the decision that we are making in the moment, which is typically inaction. Because action and also inaction are both decisions that we make moment to moment.

To say that we want something – like, to start surfing for example. And then to say that we will do it after we lose 10 pounds is robbing ourselves of an experience that we can have today, if we allowed it. It’s giving away our power and our self-accountability.

Why?

Because the experience that we could have today is scary.

So, when I read tarot for people, if there are no specific questions at hand, I will use a common card spread called the celtic cross. In it, there is a position called “Hopes and Fears”. Well, let me actually walk you through the entire spread (as I read it – which probably has variance from a traditional reader), for funsies.

The spread is this: We have the present moment or the question or the problem at hand AKA where the focus is. And then we have what’s blocking us. Position 1, present. Position 2, blocker. Then we have what’s going on in the subconscious and what’s going on in the perceived conscious, positions 3 and 4. We have a past moment position, a next steps or guidance for your most likely path forward – those are 5 and 6. And then we have 7-10, which are how you see yourself, your environment (so what are the conditions surrounding you right now), and then your hopes and fears. And then your outcome card – aka where the energy is most likely headed.

Now, I love this spread because it gives us so many perspectives for one human situation or feeling or experience. And if you’ve ever had a reading with me – it’s so much less about predicting what’s going to happen and it’s so much more of a deep reflection on what’s real and true, which is profoundly healing and empowering across the board of situations and possibilities.

It allows us to fully examine a situation or desire in a safe and loving and judgment free space that ultimately inspires you into aligned action – because your view has been widened. This is why I love Tarot and why it’s such a powerful took for unblocking ourselves, even when we don’t realize we are blocking ourselves.

And so, back to this position or placement of “hopes and fears”. What I often find is that the card or the energy that lives in this position is almost always two sides of the same coin.

I hope for X and I am also deeply afraid of X.

I want to be in leadership, but I am also deeply afraid of becoming a leader.

I want to make a million dollars, but I am also deeply afraid of holding a million dollars.

I want to learn how to surf, but I am also deeply afraid of surfing and being seen.

When we say “I’ll begin when” or “If I had X” “If I were Z” these are huge signs and indicators that we want something and we are not showing up for it, we are not allowing ourselves to have it, we are putting it off.

And at the end of the statement, we have a key into a surface level fear – something that is maybe reasonably stopping us. But, that’s usually not the whole story.

And yet, sometimes we think that to move forward, we just have to push ourselves through the action. We just have to sign up for a surf lesson. We just have to take on a leadership role. We just have to push through the fear and show up.

I’m not like, against this.

AND.

We don’t have to just push ourselves into the thing. Sometimes when we just push through, we find ourselves repeating the same old patterns and habits that have been holding us back for a long, long time.

What I am offering and inviting us into instead is to get curious and explore.

Let’s take the statement –

“I’ll start really showing up for my job and giving it my all when I get that promotion.” So in this statement, we are looking for recognition or essentially permission to start showing up fully. We are also demonstrating a few desires, two obvious and one sneaky (and then probably a handful fully under the surface).

I desire to show up fully for my job.

I want a promotion.

I want to be seen. I want someone to see me showing up fully. Sneaky.

So what’s stopping us?

Well, one way to find out and the tool I present to you in this podcast episode is shadow work.

Finish these statement:

I deeply fear and resent showing up fully at work because…

I deeply fear and resent getting a promotion because…

I deeply fear and resent being seen at work because…

And finish these statements 10-25 times, or as many times as you possibly can. And do this every day for one week.

The statements that will show up, that are hanging out in your subconscious mind will blow your socks off.

Here’s a really fun one that I think we all love, because so many of us want money but so many of us are afraid to admit that we want money.

Finish this statement:

I deeply fear and resent making a lot of money because…

I deeply fear and resent making a lot of money because…

This is simply another way to excavate the sneaky subconscious beliefs that you may be holding.

No matter how much we push through the fears and show up anyways, these beliefs will still exist and slow us down or even bring us to a halt, or in the very least create internal conflict and maybe existential dread and make our dreams feel funny at best and unattainable at worst.

BTW I am sharing a variation of a shadow work exercise that I first discovered through Holisticism in their paid community, The North Node. This is not an ad, I am not affiliated with them, but I do so love and respect and devour everything that Michelle and team does at Holisticism. The North Node is a paid community/ongoing course/resource repository for intuitive and creative entrepreneurs. It’s a really great place to plug in if you are a newer entrepreneur and to be quite honest, it’s the only entrepreneurial space I’ve ever plugged into that I’ve paid for where I’ve been like “wow this is really worth every penny.” The work that they offer is fluff-free. It’s all meaningful and propelling, if you’re a business owner.

And not everyone here is a business owner, or aspires to be one, and so I think you’re grossly missing out in life if you don’t have this tool.

I deeply fear and resent [insert topic].. is a shadow work tool that transformed my relationship with so many things that I have both desired and pushed away.

So, I offer this to you, if you are feeling a little stuck, a little tender, a little like you want to move forward but you’re not sure how – try this exercise.

If you are feeling over the moon about life, but you still find yourself saying these cute little statements in your brain or outloud of “I’ll do X when Y happens” or “If I were so and so I would blah.” or “If I had this much money, this is what I would do with it.” whatever.
